I've been dared by Jodi to participate in an uber-cool music quiz. And I even found a Morrissey song title to use for the occasion, in honor of Jodi recent hugging by author Douglas Coupland.
1. Total amount of music files on your computer:
I have 3822 songs in my iTunes library, and another 1500 stored on a backup drive from my old computer that I haven't bothered to put into iTunes. Seriously, 1500. I'm not surprised by the number of songs. I'm surprised at the even number.
2. The last CD you bought was:
The last physical CDs I bought were U2's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" and Rufus Wainwright's "Want Two", which I bought on the same day. I buy most of my music digitally. Last week I used a bunch of emusic freebies to get the Pixies "Bossanova", "The Best of Morphine", and Clem Snide "The Ghost of Fashion".
3. What is the song you last listened to before reading this message?
I just got up and I have a flu-induced headache, so I haven't listened to anything today. I haven't listened to much of anything since being attacked by the flu.
4. Write down 5 songs you often listen to or that mean a lot to you:
"Silent All These Years" Tori Amos - This one had a huge impact on me during my college years. It got me through some really rough patches. Even as I've grown older it's still that one song that makes me nod my head and say, "Yep. This could have been written especially for me."
"Tender" Blur - Sort of a theme song for the end of my pregnancy, Clara Jane's birth, and the difficult yet beautiful first year of her life.
"Brass Monkey" Beastie Boys - Why, because it's the theme song of the super secret agent girl-spy group I'm in. If anyone asks, my name is Prissy von Monkeyassen and this kid on my hip is Coco Monqueetoes. Those dancing fools with me? That's Exena Humpamonkey and Star Monkeybrass Fear our wrath, or we'll have to get down on you with the deadliest of martial arts - Monkey-Style! (Translation: the song makes me think of my friends, which makes me laugh my ass off, which makes me feel all happy.)
"Thunder Road" Bruce Springsteen - Only because it's the most beautiful words set to music. Ever. The honesty in his music and his ability to convey the beauty and soul of the most mundane is what makes Springsteen great. This song always stops me dead in my tracks, ever since I was 13 years old, sitting in my room with my boom box on my lap, listening to this song over and over.
"Beautiful Day" U2 - On its own, it's a great song, but it somehow has a knack for being played as I'm embarking on Big Things: leaving the house to camp out for a U2 show, leaving for Memphis with my girlfriends, leaving for the hospital to give birth. It seems like it's always there to remind me that I might be walking into the unknown when I walk out my front door, and it might be scary, but that's the only way I'll ever capture the wonderful things life has to offer.
4. What 3 people are you going to pass this baton to and why?
Exena HumpamonkeyKristina and Holley, because I know they'll have good answers. Wendy, because she's been too damn quiet lately. And I think the world should know just how important Vanilla Ice has been to her over the years.
Edited to add...
Lots of cool people, like Diatriber, Holley and Kara have been doing this thing where they put their MP3 players on random and post the first 10 songs that play. Here's mine:
"Tell Me More and Then Some" Nina Simone
"Josephine" Tori Amos
"For No One" Beatles
"This Land is Yor Land" Woody & Arlo Guthrie
"Top" Live
"Moten Swing" Benny Moten's Kansas City Orchestra
"Stand" REM
"You've Had it With You" Paul Westerberg
"Everyday" Dave Matthews Band
"So Wrong" Patsy Cline
Aside from that Live track, not too terrble. Could be entirely more embarrassing, considering my collection.

my shuffle turned out better than expected, too, considering some of what's in my collection. :)
Posted by: kara at February 5, 2005 01:53 PM"Beautiful Day" is one of my theme songs now... I am listening to it ALL the time. There's a good cover of it by a Christian punk group called Sanctus Real. I know, Christian punk, who would have thunk?
