Day Three - Friday Shuffle - The Call a Spade a Spade Edition
Have I mentioned lately how much I love thrift stores?
I love thrift stores.
Since I'm a fan of vintagey kitsch, most of my house is decorated with thrift store finds. Clothes, I usually don't have much luck in the thrift stores, as I'm plus-size, and most plus-size gals wear their clothes to death when they find something that fits right. Every now and then, I'll get lucky on the accessories front. I've found some fabulous scarves over the years, and a few great purses.
Since Clara Jane's birth, I don't hit the thrift stores like I used to. I try to avoid taking her anyplace where I'm just browsing, as it's a recipe for a really bored kid. But today, we were driving through our neighborhood, and I got the unbearable urge to hit the great thrift store up the street.
It looked like a good day, because right off the bat, I found this purse:
$4, and I love it. I can even swap scarves as the mood strikes.
With the purse in my cart, I started to trot my happy ass back to the toy department, which is my new favorite thrift store hang-out. But then I noticed a striped corner of another purse peeking out from the back of a rack. Hmmm ... looks like the kate spade-style knock-offs I like. See, I don't like real kate spade bags because, as one of my friends (sadly, I can't remember which one) once said, it's obscene to spend hundreds of dollars on a simple cardboard bag covered in fabric. Obscene and stupid.
However, I have no problem paying $4 for one:
Crappy photo, as I was shaking with glee when I took it. But there's the label, along with the $3.95 price tag.
Now, I'm about 75% certain that the bag's a fake. I don't care. I like it. I'd like it without the label. I just got a perverse joy from finding this at my junkie neighborhood thrift store. The woman parked beside me walked out with a Coach suitcase, also $4. We agreed that either the person doing the pricing didn't know brands, or was an expert on fakes and knew more than we did.
My usual thrift store partner, PKB, missed the glorious event, as she was laid up sick at home. Besides, she wouldn't have had time to get her butt over fast enough to suit my spur-of-the-moment shopping trip. I did have the foresight to pull my excited shit together and call her to gloat. She's insisting on shared custody of the purse. I'm putting a clause in the contract that she has to glue the label back on if it falls off.
There's gonna be good songs in spades in today's shuffle. I can feel it, and my gut is so very right today.

I was looking for a nice address book for a friend for Christmas. I walked in a little sheshe stationary store and found exactly what I was looking for. It was leather and had refills and a calendar and a great pen. I figure $50 to $75. The kind of indulgence you would never do for yourself, but a wonderful gift for a good friend. I asked the sales girl how much it was. She told me $225. I gasped. She said "well, it's kate spade." I laughed, like that mattered.
