Hacksaw, Please!

I'm here. I'm alive. I'm not unpacked. I'm swamped. You know how it goes.

I'm still in love with Prettytown. No matter how many local officials I talk to, this still seems a bit like Norman Rockwell Nirvanaland, and I'm good with that.

We've only had two problems since arriving, and both involve us not being able to access our crap. First, on Thursday night, we arrived at the new house without the padlock key for our U-Haul, a situation that was easily fixed with some bolt-cutters.

But now we've got a bigger impediment keeping us from our crap, which still fills our two-car garage. Last night, the garage door opener died. With the door down.

Have I mentioned that, when they built our garage, the only opening they put in it was the actual big garage door? No windows. No human-sized door. Just the two-car monster door, which is now stuck in the down position, holding all but one pair of my shoes and all of my art and music books hostage.

Anyone got a hacksaw that'll cut through bricks? Or perhaps a large ax? It seems the bolt cutters won't do us much good in this situation.

I'm not freaking about this too much. It'll get fixed. Somehow. I'm still just too damn happy to be in this house and town, and away from the crap-filled nightmare street.

There's really not much else to tell. I want to write in detail about the old neighborhood, now that I'm not there anymore and and give away identifying details. But there's unpacking to do, a door to jimmy, job-training to finish, parents to occupy, Stag Beer to drink, a new White Stripes album to hear. You know how it goes.

These are the things you will look back at and laugh. I can hear your happiness.

I thought of you yesterday with the releasing of the White Stripes. And I thought of you again as I rushed out to Borders to purchase the new Polyphonic Spree! (I'm sure I'll think of you again sometime this afternoon as my kids nap and I actually get to listen to the new Polyphonic Spree.)

Mmmm, Beer. I'm kind of in the same situation because the door to my storage area seems to be stuck shut. I know the painted surfaces sometimes stick together so I never close it all the way. Seems like the workmen in the complex closed it the other day. Okay it's less dire but I know my plant stakes are in there and my pepper plant is droopy! And my lawn chairs are all in there.

ello, you know that garage door sticking is a message saying 'YOU'RE HERE' and you're not escaping.

It's your lovely home and that is how it is. Happy happy thoughts for your new abode, and go enjoy that beer and your new fab neighbours. xx

PS my house i put on the market a little bit ago has had an offer and the lawyers are doing their stuff now. Househunting for the new heaven is agogo!

Garage doors are so pesky!

I managed to lock our car in our garage right after we moved to Iowa. Having never had a garage before, I forgot that it's helpful to take the garage door opener with you (and I thought I was being so clever by closing the door from the inside and running under the door). And, of course, the property manager didn't have a key to the door or the code. These things are sometimes helpful.

Anyway, yay for Prettytown!

Isn't there an emergency cord pull for the garage door? Usually a rope with a red handle attached? I never saw one that didn't have an emergency pull.

Sweetie, sounds like it's time to get you a copy of the Prettytown Yellow Pages and look up a repairman. You'll want to unpack and get yourself settled in. Dang it, there could be yarn in those boxes. You don't want to be separated from your yarn!

I haven't bought the White Stripes CD yet. Is it fab?

I'm glad you're all there now even if you can't access your crap -- you'll get to it eventually. I also thought of you today when I downloaded the new White Stripes. I'm looking forward to going home (I'm at work now) where I can finally listen to it.

Funny, especially if you look at our garage door. The garage itself is listing, and the door doesn't stay on the track anymore. One panel fell off, and it doesn't close all the way. Go South City!
